• Pilbara cactus cull 20.5.14
    • Land care workers are concerned about introduced cacti and their potential to spread across Western Australia. The WA Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA), NRM Rangelands Pilbara Corridors Project and Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee (PMMC) are collaborating to tackle the weeds.

There are more than 200 species of cacti but the crack down is focussing on the American Opuntioids in particular, due to their potential to form dense infestations. The Pilbara environment is well suited to cacti and there are concerns that if left unchecked, the plant will choke waterways and pastoral land.
